In a historic first, attorney Marc Daffner won a death penalty case where the defendant was accused of murdering a St. Clair Township police officer who was responding to a call at the client's residence. Although this case was called "impossible" by many, our office was able to gain an acquittal for our client under the theory of self-defense, as Mr. Shetler fired his Remington hunting rifle only in response to multiple shots fired at him by the officer. While this case is tragic and resulted in the loss of life, the jury was able to see that this issue was a victory for the right of self-defense, even where the aggressor is a police officer. Our hearts go out to the Reed family for their loss in this incident.
